The charter grant thing should exist as an option, but should not eliminate public schools entirely. Public schools are simply the most efficient, and cost-effective, way of getting things done. Education, to a certain point, is an essential service. I can't imagine that you would want to totally get rid of truancy laws, so what's going to happen is you'll have a bunch of startup schools just cash grabbing money whilst offering almost nothing, and other than those, the rest of them are just going to be price gouging the hell out of it because they'll have so much demand.

Any reference to, "Living Wage," makes the topic immediately ridiculous. Living wage depends on where you live...so what job would be needed to accomplish that also depends on where you live. That's precisely the point I was making in my post.

You could make $30/hour in San Francisco and that's barely going to be a 'living wage', if it is at all. Even at $62,400, your income taxes are going to knock a single person down to about 48.9k take home and rents on a one-bedroom apartment are more than 2k a month. Maybe a person could get by, but things would be pretty tight.

In the meantime, if you have someone who lives in a semi-rural area where you can get a one-bedroom apartment for around $600 (or less) per month, then that person could make $8/hour, work full time, and (after accounting for other cost of living factors) probably has things roughly the same as the person from San Francisco making $30/hour does.

So, that's the point. Conservatives like to ignore the fact that the economics of some areas are significantly different from their areas. Liberals like to pretend that other places in the country simply do not actually exist.

Lots of suggestions out there and really nobody is calling to eliminate the public schools. Though some should be closed, namely the ones that you hear of with low graduation rates and few kids at grade level. The ones with high violence levels, and I am not talking about the random shooter thing.

We need charter schools. We need more home schooling. We need "neighborhood home schooling" with a few families pooling the duties. We need private schools that might have specialties. We need to quit throwing money at the public schools that give no better results.
