Looking at the map in the link, it shows the alkali flat trail and it looks like they tried maybe to do a maybe 5 mile - at most - round trip. Do you suppose they somehow got lost? Seems unlikely.

I'll grant you that it would seem that healthy people should be able to get back out alive no matter what for that distance too, with or without water. The woman for sure turned back ... and couldnt even do 3 miles. We're not talking 110+ degrees, or was that reported wrong? If not I could see getting into horrible condition but not death. It takes about 20 minutes to walk a mile, strolling along would be 30 minutes/mi maybe. Perhaps they actually did have health problems, if it's that then this is Darwin Award material.

I say this as someone who is easily taken out of action by heat.
