Is $5/hour shameful?

Kids expect outrageous amounts for very little
work now. 3 hours of babysitting, $40. 90 min
of yard work, $25. My brother in law got a neighbor
kid to get up on his flat porch roof this winter and
clear off all the snow and ice, took him 2 hours.
The kid said he wanted 50 bucks. The B in law thought
he was joking, he was going to give him $30.
Gave him $40 instead. He was appalled that a 15
year old thinks his labor is worth $25 an hour.

It all starts with what their parents give them for work around the house. When the parents overpay they think this is a "normal" wage and that they "deserve" the same from anyone else. After college the same kids refuse to work for less than they want, living in the parent's basement.
The President is a fink.

Fifty sounds like a reasonable rate considering how difficult, dangerous the job clearing ice and snow off a roof is to accomplish. Your brother in law would have lost everything if that kid wound up paralyzed, so he should be considered lucky.

It wasn't dangerous or difficult in the least. And
gee, that's very PC of you to be all worried, but
if it was dangerous and difficult he would have
done it himself. And the kid didn't end up getting
hurt at all! Amazing! I've probably fallen off of
roofs half a dozen times, never even broke a finger.
My dad painted houses for 50 years and he died
of old age. It's a miracle he lived thru it.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

I think you found post 15000 to tie them all together.
