https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/us-lawmakers-plan-new-130-fee-for-electric-vehicle-owners/ar-AA23uX9t

GOP is pushing hard to set a base annual tax of 130 a year (with annual 5 dollar increase up to 150.)

The theory is this would allow EV owners to pay towards the gas tax. The issue is gas car owners pay on average only 70 dollars a year in gas tax (federally.). So this means EV owners are paying more than double the amount (when it hits the 150 level.).

It seems quite unfair, that instead of raising the gas tax (which has remained stagnant since 1993,) now EV owners will be financially subsidizing the roads by paying a disproportionate level of tax.

At least I can figure out what the problem is, as gas tax partially covers road repairs and so forth. There's no way (as yet) to precisely meter what electricity is going to EVs vs other uses or even what the source of your electricity is from.

If they did an overall general tax, people who don't drive much would be overly taxed and high mileage people would save overall.

I don't hate the principle of taxing EVs for road use (my state already does it at a state level, charging an extra 210 dollars a year per EV registered.) I hate the amount, EVs are paying double what normal gas drivers are paying (and, as somebody who doesn't drive much, I would be paying over quadruple, what I personally would pay.) EVs tend to be used locally, so they get less miles than gas cars to begin with.

So the concept is fine, the 135-150 amount is absurd.

I suppose they could come up with more novel measurements, for instance, how often you purchase tires. Also would have issues.

A flat annual registration fee is fine and simple. Just charging EV owners double what the average gas user uses, despite EVs driving less miles on average is absurd.

Even a flat 80 would be on the high side, but reasonable. 150 is absurd, and is clearly being punitive. Now, I would be fine with 150 if the gas tax also doubled....

How about recording mileage at each annual safety inspection and taxing per mile, say 0.5 to 1 cent per mile?

Me too. My southern neck of the woods is experiencing a pretty severe drought. The lakes and ponds are apparently at their lowest levels ‘ever’. So what is the answer? Keep expanding development requiring more and more water resources. It is stunning how much water an average ‘first world’ resident uses.

Good, except in Florida, we have no safety inspections.
