I was checking in at a casino's hotel and as always they asked for my credit card so they can place a $100 "hold."

Fine, been doing that for years.

Curious, I asked "But what if I don't have a credit or debit card?"

"Then you can't check in."

Whoa...not even with cash?

Whatever happened to US currency being acceptable for all debts, public and private?

It’s becoming more common. You and I are probably too old, but it’s easy to foresee our grandkids not using cash at all sometime during their lifetimes.

I totally resent the fact that you must have credit cards in order to live a life ... not counting just never leaving the house

as a result I only use cards where I get cash back, and make sure I have at least 4 weeks to pay [averaging 5, and up to 6] by switching cards ... I feel I'm getting even somewhat that way

which reminds me of the time when the Soviet Union collapsed, and Russia released a lot of the secret police stuff. Everybody wanted to know about the dossiers they had on everybody, but while it was there, this was minimal in volume. They pointed to the Credit Bureaus in the West and said Omigod! we had nothing like that on that scale!!

As I noted here once, during a power outage after a Cat 3 hurricane, stores couldn't take plastic cash for 3 days.
