Peter Principle

Somehow because a guy has the skills to be an offensive coordinator, which entails designing plays, blocking schemes, misdirection of receivers, …. it is believed that they also know essential strategy like when to punt versus kick a field goal versus go for it. Or when to use their timeouts. Or when to go for two points versus an extra point. Or how far a FG is worth trying. Or when a ‘challenge’ is worth trying. (Same concept for defensive coordinators). The number of head coaches that are just not smart enough to actually do the job is striking. I’ve watched a few of Aaron Glenn’s games and his decisions are at best baffling. I’ll wait for the arrows, but as far as strategy goes, I know I’d be better than any of these head coaches. (Not at designing plays, or motivating players, or evaluating talent…. Just the game day strategy. What are your ‘Peter Priinciple’ examples? |

I don't watch sports, so I can't comment on your NFL examples. And, I can't think of any great widely known references off my head. But, it's a widespread problem, people assume because somebody excels at one skill set, they must excel at another. |

I suspect the Peter principle also is at play in organizations that rely upon volunteers: like when a reformed alcoholic offers to work in a soup kitchen but lacks any cooking skills. There are also a lot of incompetent attorneys out there, especially sole practitioners who rely on the income of their significant other to help cover living expenses until they "finally make it..." |

Not saying Trump is a good President, but I don’t think he’s a good example of the ‘Peter Principle’. He just ascended out of nowhere politically. It’s not like he was a good labor secretary/Congressman/Governor/any political position first. And to use the Peter principle, you would have to admit he was successful at his previous position. I’m doubting MrV will name his previous successful endeavor. |

Trump is a complete disaster as a politician: there's a damned good reason to leave politics to politicians and not to amateurs with a grudge against the establishment. |

Your blatant TDS is showing. I start a thread on the Peter Principle and your addled brain goes right to Trump even though he is not an example of such. |

He's a perfect example..."promoted" or "elevated" to the level of incompetence. It's one thing to bankrupt / destroy a casino or two, but a whole country, that's another matter. As for what MAGA boot lickers call "TDS:" I wear the phrase as a badge of honor. You want another great example of the Peter Principle? Look no further than Pete Hegseth: there's no end to the bozos in the Trump Clown Cabinet. |
