I suppose it's possible he hid these things somewhere near the building, but he had just bought the ladder, and he was seen acting weird near the metal detecting place [acc to report I saw] as if he thought of going straight in

it's not that easy to hide a rifle on your person [maybe he took a pistol, or maybe the report is false].

Yeah but those were two very different things to be fair. To be an enlisted soldier especially in WWII, you do not really need any experience, you just need to be 18, healthy enough to not pass out during your physical. And, you get a couple of weeks of training before being thrown in the fray. This is not really a position that requires any kind of "experience" per say. The people making the big calls were well over 35.
