Those of you near Santa Barbara should be aware that the UCSB corpse flower is going to bloom any day now. There have been very few such blooms in captivity. They are known for a very repugnant smell of rotting meat.

For more information, please read People are dying to see the 'corpse flower' bloom in Santa Barbara.

I was in SB last week and kept a close vigil on the webcam, but unfortunately he/she (the plant is both sexes) chose to wait until I left. Here is a picture of me with the Corpse Flower taken on July 25.

they need a balloon or something tied near the plant for the webcam, something that moves so you know it ain't broken!

That plant next to it tends to fan out and contract at certain times of the day. You can also see the datestamp on the side of the picture.

Given your handle, I thought you might take an interest in an odious plant.

I don't think captivity applies to plants.

BTW, you can replicate the expereince by simply leaving some meat in the trunk of your car, say two pounds or so. In Vegas I estimate you'd get the full effect in, oh, two days.

The Wizard might not enjoy the attention given to the smell of something rotten emanating from the trunk of his car. (But we would, when he got around to telling the story about the subsequent police inquiry)

That's not what my plants tell me!

Yes, but the blooming of the flower usually becomes an event for area singles to meet and mingle. Not too likely to occur curbside in Vegas.

I think it does. This is a very endangered plant native of Sumatra. They will probably die out if efforts are not taken to cultivate them in greenhouses.

That will certainly attract the ladies. I could use all the help I can get in that area.

You might get ladies with wings, but they won't be Victoria Secret models.

So it's not in its natural habitat. That's not captivity. If left alone in Sumatra, it wouldn't be freely roaming the jungle, would it?

There is actually a list of every known bloom in cultivation of this flower, that is how rare is this event.
