Just jump to about 2:30. I wonder if I found a plate Wiz does not know about?

I hate no ending to a story. Wizard, did you win that auction on the no reserve 32 run? What happened there? Or did I miss something?

Sorry, yes I did win! That collection is now hanging in the car museum at the Riverside in Laughlin.

Old Hawaiian license plate are among the most difficult to find in the world of license plate collecting. That said, here is something so rare that I think it is the only known plate:

1916 Hawaii.

I'm pretty sure this one is for the Big Island, as each island/city did their own thing back then. These are so rare that both my books on license plate values don't even list 1916 Hawaiian plates. There are two entries for 1915:

Big Island: $1,500 (good) , $2,400 (vg)
City of Honolulu: $320 (fair)

I think to publish a value they have to know of at least one sale.

The World Licenses of the World has an example of a 1916 Honolulu. Generally speaking, plates from that era from Honolulu are worth much less than the other two types, Big Island and Maui.

I would hazard to say this is the only known 1916 Big Island plate.

As I write this, with 2 days and 8 hours to go, the price is at $1,825. I predict it will go for about $5,000, which is about as high as it gets for a single plate.

Are you bidding?

No. I'm sure somebody else wants it more than me.

Do you have any idea what items valued as rarest top of line, won't make money in the future for the owner?

Me, I would guess more often than not the top line item always improves as investment. I'm not saying buy it, but $5000 for the top or rarest seems a bargain among collectables.

License plates, sadly, do not hold their value well. At best they stay even, without adjusting for inflation. The problem is most collectors are older men and as they die off they are not being replaced by enough new collectors. Definitely a dying hobby. I've been in it for 35 years, so I know. If I saw this plate as a good investment, I would bid $5,000 or so.

Still, it would be something to own the only 1915 license plate from the Big Island. I'm still thinking about it.

Sorry for the tardy reply to this one. I never heard of this so-called country. They do have an entry at World License Plates. If I ever see one on Ebay I'll try to get it.
