All the old guys hung their plates. It
was very common. My dads garage
was covered in them. He got them
from other states too, I don't know
how.

Back in the day you got new plates every year or almost every year and no such thing as vanity plates. As a kid we had these wooden cars and my dad put his old plates on for us. Also had them on our Hot Cycles. It was fun.

I would collect some on some basis, maybe year I was born and states I have been to except I do not really have space and am trying to keep from accumulating stuff in life. I do love seeing collections though.

Is there a legal way to get a highway sign?

As the signs become damaged, the various state highway departments will retire them. My main contact says he has good contacts with said highway departments and I've never questioned it.

I also have an interstate sign -- The 5 out of California.

I think it is pretty common for governments to sell old signs to the public. Here in Seattle they are slowly replacing all the street signs and the old ones are available at the city DOT warehouse:

Dang, Troll Ave. seems to be taken.

I proudly have street signs from Santa Barbara and Buenos Aires on my walls.

I didn't see it on the list, but it was last updated 8/14/13.

There's only one way to spell Roosevelt in any
language and BLVD is a French word, boulevard.

What other language would liberating US Troops use?

As to the old one "Street" = "Straße" so still "Str" not "St" in USA.
