As of July 30, 2020 the list of wealthiest women in the US ranked by net worth and scored (SELF-MADE SCORE = 1 fortune is completely inherited, to 10 if fortune is entirely self made).

Out of the top 14 women, 5 are named Mars, and 4 are named Walton. Six of them are given 1 on the self-made score (fortune is completely inherited,) and another six are given self made score of 2 (fortune is mostly inherited,). MacKenzie Scott Bezos and Abigail Johnson are given 3 on self-made score, as they were executives in their companies.

#14 Alice Walton $61.8 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#18 MacKenzie Scott $57.8 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 3)
#22 Julia Koch & family $44.9 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#36 Jacqueline Mars $28.9 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#83 Laurene Powell Jobs & family $17.0 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#111 Abigail Johnson $15.0 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 3)
#226 Ann Walton Kroenke $8.3 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#237 Blair Parry-Okeden $8.2 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#265 Nancy Walton Laurie $7.5 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#273 Marijke Mars $7.2 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#273 Pamela Mars $7.2 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#273 Valerie Mars $7.2 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#273 Victoria Mars $7.2 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 2)
#285 Christy Walton $7.1 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 1)
#291 Diane Hendricks $7.0 B (SELF-MADE SCORE 9)

The wealthiest US woman whose fortune is largely self-made is Diane Hendricks, Cofounder and Chairman, ABC Supply (age 73). Diane Hendricks chairs ABC Supply, one of the largest wholesale distributors of roofing, siding and windows in America.

Diane Hendricks cofounded the business with her late husband, Ken, in Beloit, Wisconsin, in 1982. In 2006, with his personal wealth estimated at $2.6 billion, Ken Hendricks was added to the Forbes list of the world's billionaires. Hendricks died at age 66 on December 21, 2007, when he fell through a sub floor under construction and into the garage of his home.

Diane led ABC to make the two biggest acquisitions in its history, buying rival Bradco in 2010 and building materials distributor L&W Supply in 2016. Because she co-founded the company and the value of the company tripled after her husband’s death, she is considered largely self -made.

Where's Oprah Winfrey?

Oprah has a lot of power, and quite a lot of money for an entertainer, but she is not in the $7 billion + class of wealth

There are 6 black billionaires in the USA (and another 7 around the world), all of them self-made. The bottom four are household names.
6. Jay-Z grew the proceeds from his music career into a billion-dollar fortune with smart investments. Net worth: $1 billion Source of wealth: music, investments
5. Kanye West is America's newest Black billionaire. Net worth: $1.3 billion Source of wealth: music, streetwear brand Yeezy
4. Michael Jordan used his success as a basketball player to build a best-selling footwear brand. Net worth: $2.1 billion Source of wealth: sports, endorsements
3. Oprah Winfrey made a multimillion-dollar fortune from her media empire. Net worth: $2.6 billion Source of wealth: media
2. David Steward built his fortune running an IT service provider that counts Citi, Verizon, and the federal government as clients. Net worth: $3.5 billion Source of wealth: information technology services
1. Investor Robert F. Smith is the richest black man in the country. Net worth: $5 billion Source of wealth: private equity

Forrest Mars Jr died in 1999 at the age of 95 having built the company founded by his father (d.1934) into a personal fortune worth $4 billion which he left to his three children. His oldest son died in 2016 and left his stock in the company to his four daughters.

So now there are six Mars billionaires

John Mars $28.9 B age 85 (born October 15, 1935)
Jacqueline Mars $28.9 B age 81 (born October 10, 1939)
Forrest Edward Mars Jr. (born August 16, 1931 – died July 26, 2016) oldest son died at age 84 from a heart attack
Marijke Mars $7.2 B age 56
Pamela Mars $7.2 B age 60
Valerie Mars $7.2 B age 61
Victoria Mars $7.2 B age 64

It seems like the Mars family wealth is growing at an incredible speed in the last 21 years.

It seems unlikely that black billionaires will ever catch up to women in their 50s and 60s who did nothing but be born 4th generation into a candy fortune family.
