Is this really a good idea?

Agree here. The Tesla requires a menu to turn on the flipping headlights.

Back when I listened to Paul Harvey
in the early 70's, he had a story of
a Saudi who bought a motor home
with cruise control. It did the driving
for you, he was told. So he got on
the freeway, set the cruise and went
to the back of the motor home to
get a snack. And then, you know..
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Totally agree that the screens are dangerous. I had to borrow a 4X4 pick-up to get to a remote job in the snow that I didn't want to trust my van to get there and back. Even had to chain up the 4X4 to get in the last couple of miles. The radio was on the screen. Try to adjust the volume or change stations on the touch screen was impossible while bouncing along on the slippery gravel road. Thank God the lights weren't on the screen or I would have been off the road for sure. This wasn't a city/highway car it was a friggin Ford 250 designed to be off road.

I would not say "designed for off-road" but for sure in conditions not of a Yuppie in a Lexus. Ford used to have extra bug buttons in their trucks for contractors wearing gloves, etc. Wait until it gets dirt and other stuff on it that working men get on themselves.

Similar note I just read an article how that new Tesla truck looks designed by people never did a day's work with a truck in their lives.

While I don’t think I would give up my built-in touch screen, the learning curve to operate it like an experienced blind man takes quite awhile. And I still don’t always hit the right control on first attempts.

That giant Tesla screen tempts you to look pretty far away from the windshield which seems like an added hazard.

Even Hitler knew to offer a simple, reasonable mode of transportation.
Cars with these software management screens do not offer "transpotation" they offer an immersive "transportation experience".

I am waiting for us to have someone make a "back to basics" car and sell a ton of them to people not wanting to pay $35000 for the average car.

I thought that about the Honda Ridgeline, but that truck still gets great reviews from Motorweek and Car and Driver. Motorweek recently did a midsize truck comparison and the Ridgeline won it.

Which one, 1st gen or 2nd? 2nd is fine, it is not as heavy-duty as most others but it does well for people who need a bed for basic use. 1st, OTOH, was a mess from a "truck" standpoint. Some designers think this or that will look cool, but there are reasons so much on trucks is the same no matter who makes it.
