If they ever asked me, I would advise them that tilt rotors are not as safe as regular helicopters. I don't know if they can "auto-gyro" and glide in like a helicopter can if an engine quits. All you hear about after tilt rotor crashes are body counts.

Every picture I see of an advanced flying car has a tilt rotor

It seems like VIP helicopters get longer range, but they don't get any faster.

It always amazes me how far 1000 miles
is in EU. In the US you'd be in Iowa,
not even halfway across the country.

The range is in kilometers, so the big circle is about 620 statute miles.

Even more astounding. If you started in
NYC, you'd be in Indiana. People from
Eur who visit here for the first time are
always astonished at the sheer size
of the US. It's so far between major
cities.

Living in Western Canada I am always amazed at how close together the major cities on the US Atlantic Seaboard are to each other.

It's 83 air miles from the main train station in downtown Philadelphia and Penn station in Manhattan. You would think by now that there would be a true high-speed rail, but the Acela takes 75-77 minutes.

London to Aberdeen Scotland is listed at 650 km and they list the cost of a leased fixed-wing plane at 16,871GBP =$21,325 (one way) to fly the Queen and Prince Phillip to her palace in Scotland (Balmoral). It seems that at some point they could upgrade the helicopter to fly that distance. That way you don't have to drive to the airport on each end.

The specs on the Current Royal helicopter delivered November 2009 indicate that it might make it, but it would take over 2 hours.
