For me, they all stem from my youth. The
first would have to be, no Santa. Was a
big fan till I was 7 and my cousin filled
me is. Sigh.

Smoking is cool. No, it's not. But I sure
thought it was in the 50's and 60's. I
sneaked smokes from my parents and
felt very cool on the basement stairway.
Took another 10 years for it to sink in
just how disgusting it really was.

Girls are mysterious and make great
companions, are always on your side
if it's your GF, should be forgiven
everything always. This one took the
longest to die, but die it did. I slowly
came to have almost no use for women,
and certainly not their companionship.
If I had a choice on a desert island of
a gorgeous dumb blond, or a super smart
Gay guy, I'd take the guy without hesitation.
I'll take no sex good conversation any day.

More to come.

I'd say making it to management. When you make low to mid level management you have little real power. You can do next to nothing without permission, and the permission is never given because the level above cannot do anything either. You start to realize how unintelligent so many people are. Also how many just plain stupid mistakes people make.

Eventually you realize how prophetic that statement in "Office Space" about just wanting not to be hassled is.
The President is a fink.

It was a big disappointment when I
realized the majority of people really
weren't any happier with their lives
than I was. Not saying I was ever
unhappy, but when I was young, I
thought all those people in the houses
I drove by were really REALLY happy
and that would be me some day. Nope.

Hawaii. Huge disappointment. When I
moved there with my GF in the mid 70's,
I had giant high hopes. Turned out if
you don't have a job before you get there,
Hawaii sucks. Hawaii with no money is
the same as anywhere, only with paradise
weather. And giant racial divides on all
sides.

Making lots of money makes you happier.
Not really, as it turns out. Making lots of
it means spending lots of time doing it.
Trading time for money is not the path
to true happiness.

Religion was a big disappointment. In my
20's and 30's I was into spirituality, was
looking for something. I wasn't an atheist,
but I wasn't a believer either.

I slowly came to realize religion was only
as good as the amount of effort you put
into it. There was no 'there' there, it's
you who make it up as you go along.
No mysteries to discover, what you see
every day is what you get.

The supernatural not being 'super' was
slowly revealed and I realized I was an
atheist. If religion is only as good as
what you put into it, what's the point.
You can say that about any hobby, and
religion has no side benefits. At least
if I collected coins I'd have a valuable
coin collection eventually. With religion
you have what you started with. Nothing.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
