Flynt knew he needed guidance and Falwell gave it. Knew Flynt would not change but kept doing his best for the guy.

WOW! That's a totally different impression
than the one I got. Flynt was the intellectual
powerhouse in that duo, and never let up
on Falwell and his ridiculous ideas. They
became friends after Falwell lost a $50mil
lawsuit against Flynt in the SCOTUS.

They went on the road doing lectures. There
was never any hint that Flynt was in need
of Falwell's crackpot guidance. In fact,
it looks like the opposite
was true. From an article Flynt wrote after
Falwell died:

I always kicked his ass about his crazy ideas and the things he said. Every time I'd call him, I'd get put right through, and he'd let me berate him about his views. When he was getting blasted for his ridiculous homophobic comments after he wrote his "Tinky Winky" article cautioning parents that the purple Teletubby character was in fact gay, I called him in Florida and yelled at him to "leave the Tinky Winkies alone."

When he referred to Ellen Degeneres in print as Ellen "Degenerate," I called him and said, "What are you doing? You don't need to poison the whole lake with your venom." I could hear him mumbling out of the side of his mouth, "These lesbians just drive me crazy." I'm sure I never changed his mind about anything, just as he never changed mine.

And he certainly didn't call him every
day. More crap Falwell made up, the
guy was such an asshat..

Flynt an "intellectual powerhouse?" HAR HAR HAR! Created "Chester the Child Molester" didn't he?

He is just another atheist obsessed with a preacher. I do not get why atheists get this obsession.

I didn't agree with his humor or politics,
but he was a hugely smart guy. Before
the accident, before he looked like
a drooling idiot.

I don't know that it's an obsession. As
an atheist it fascinates us that people
take myths and pretend they're
real in the 21st century. That they
have gods and angels looking out
for them. It flies in the face of
all reason. Mostly it's because
they were raised that way, and they
never worked it out on their own.

I keep waiting for clergy to make
sense, and am still waiting. When
I read things like 85% of priests
were raised Catholic, and 95%
of non Catholic ministers were
raised as Xtions, I give up hope.
People indoctrinated in early
childhood rarely see things clearly.

I know, right?

I was watching a little Chris Hedges on RT. He has a Master's in divinity, among other degrees. He was talking about how he went to a Christian museum [?] in maybe Kentucky. He said he would go into different rooms and talk with people in there, and no one wanted to talk about the bible with him when they found out he had a masters in divinity. He said because, most of them really hadn't either read the bible or thought about it much.

He said he spoke with religious teachers there, and how they would make up story's. One he said was that they taught kids that the reason Noah was able to get so many animals onto the ark was because he only collected baby animals. He remarked that these people believed what they were saying so fervently that they are dangerous. I think so to. They don't even know their bible, but they are teaching Christianity none the less. So they are making it up as they go along.

That is scary and sickening. I think a lot of people lack the courage to really look at the facts and face the truth no matter what. I really do try to do that, even with my inherit bias and human weakness. I might not do it perfectly, but I am willing to learn, change, and confront challenges. I don't make up things and I don't block people I disagree with.

It makes sense, though. It's all made up BS
to start with, why not make up more as
you go along. The Vatican for the longest
time kept priests from learning how to
read so they wouldn't get ahold of
a Bible and discover that half the crap
the Church taught them isn't even
in there, they made it up. Making stuff
up IS the religion.

I've seen videos of that museum, it's a
laugh riot.

Maybe we are lucky that they aren't all saying the same thing?

It is scary.

I believe that you have studied what you preach. Any craftsman should learn all they can about their trade.

I've never blocked anyone, but I do ignore at times. Same as you. A man's got to have priority's.

FrG has blocked me several times. You can
tell because you can't PM them if they have
you blocked. Which is such a relief..

I have blocked Bob once when his distortions and false history were too much to bear. He also gets very aggressive and insistent in his PMs. However I found ignoring a much better strategy. I'm too curious anyway about the things he says. If you want to be really scared just think for a moment that he is not alone in believing such wacky demonstrably false things he spouts. This makes me very sad and even more so that he is utterly unwilling to learn or even modify his positions.
