It'a a very expensive place to fly , but you can drive there in one day if you leave early in the morning. Since the highways are excellent as far as Ensenada it is advisable to leave at night and try to get to Ensenada at sunrise. That way you have maximum daylight to drive on the narrow roads. Do not drive long distances at night in Baja. There are no shoulders on the roads, and the roads can have serious problems. Your odds of being hit by a truck go up exponentially at night. Always purchase Mexican Collision Insurance when driving in Mexico. If you expect to go for more than about 12 days in the course of 12 months, then it is cheaper to purchase insurance by the year. If you are only driving Baja and/or down to the resorts in Mazatlan they sell Limited Territory policies. ![]() My general advice is not to drive the Pacific further south than Mazatlan. If you want to go to Central Mexico, it is easier and cheaper to drive to Texas and enter the country that way. There are very very limited roads, and they can wash out. As someone who was stranded in a tropical storm for 48 hours in a hot buggy Nayarit Swamp it is very unpleasant. I know a Tijuana businessman who took his family to central Mexico for a vacation. He flew home and sent one of his employees to get his car. It is not a romantic scenic drive. |

This is your idea of unpleasant? Hehe, looks like my dream vacay. I bet there's a peacock bass right up under that root ball there, and plenty of snakes and critters to pick out of those weeds =) And bad roads? Pfft, this is Baja. You just gotta bring the right equipment. Wonder if they have these at Enterprise Rent-a-Car? Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it. |
