Responding to a shift consumer demand in favor of SUVs, crossovers and pickup trucks, Ford said it planned to trim its North American car portfolio to just two models: the sporty Mustang, which debuted 50 years ago this month and a new compact crossover called Focus Active that will be introduced in 2019. Ford "will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America," including the midsize Fusion and full-size Taurus, the company said.

Their line will become a lot simpler.

So they're returning to Henry's original
idea of making just one car, the Model T?
He would have made it forever if Edsel
hadn't dragged him kicking and screaming
into the Model A.

Well two automobiles actually. The Mustang and a SUV crossover version of the Ford Focus (Focus Active). The photo is the current model of the Focus.

The bulk of Ford's profits have been in trucks in North america for many years. But more importantly it seems to be a way to move most of it's jobs away from Michigan and send them to China.

I rent a different car every week and
have driven all the intermediate class
cars. Ford might as well make just one,
I can't tell the difference between them
once you're inside.

They are all basically the same controls,
gauges, radio, cruise, I never have to
take the time to figure out the difference
from a Ford to a Nissan to a Kia to a Chevy
to a VW to a Toyota. They all drive the
same and feel the same if they're in the
same class.

Sales figures for a recent month sort of speak for themselves (except maybe for the Ford Fusion

89,385 Ford F-Series ~ light-duty trucks and medium-duty trucks
28,566 Ford Explorer ~SUV
26,253 Ford Escape ~SUV
17,444 Ford Fusion=======
13,660 Ford Edge ~SUV
12,380 Ford Transit~cargo van
11,237 Ford Focus
7,714 Ford Mustang
5,458 Ford Expedition ~SUV
3,973 Ford Transit Connect~passenger van
3,911 Ford E-Series~ full-size vans
3,657 Ford Fiesta=======
3,394 Ford Taurus=======
1,834 Ford Flex~SUV
1,416 Ford C-Max=======
9 Ford GT

Fusion sales are so much higher than Focus sales, you would think they would keep the Fusion.

I tell Uber drivers all the time my
two fave cars to rent are the Cruze
and the Focus. They both handle
great and both have lots of power.
They aren't big or small and they
get good gas mileage.

It's funny, I would think it would
be a Honda or Toyota, and it's
two common American cars.

I've been hearing this for weeks on Autoline. FCA might as well follow since the only sedan sales they are making are about 50 year old muscle car designs. On one hand, the market is SUVs and look for it to stay. I never wanted one, until I saw how much U I could get from one at THD. Then I owned one, and said I would never go back. Nicer ride height, lots of U, gas mileage almost as good as my 2005 Accent got.

When I had the Accent I said "never again" to a sedan. American's have a thing against hatchbacks because of the early 1980s. But they are far better. SUVs just even more better. Only reason I'd get a sedan was if I had a job where I had to ride clients places and needed something more formal.

OTOH, Ford is just admitting they can no longer be a full-line automaker. The Big 3 (Toyota, Nissan, Honda) will still sell sedans and hatchbacks. IMHO if they were smart they would base a sedan and mid SUV on one platform and build it on one line to capture some sales. But the American auto outfits have shown they are awful at their business for the most part. Ford rules trucks, focus on what you do well.

I will be getting a new vehicle in the next month to replace my small two door.I was planning on getting a sedan but right now there are some incredible deals available on small SUV's. I have seen the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain leasing for around $130 a month with nothing down. I may just end up with the cheapest lease I can find on any SUV as I am really not a car guy and could care less about the features.

Look at the small hatches as well for good deals.
