One of my favorite musicals, perhaps number one, is Jesus Christ Superstar. There is a "live" performance of it at 8:00 PM on NBC today. If anyone is planning to watch, I'd be happy to discuss afterward.

A good way to tell a liberal from a conservative Christian is whether they like or hate JCS. I've never met one in the middle on that topic.

Interesting litmus test. Never seen it but only musical I ever liked was “The Blues Brothers” so you may be on to something.

JCS was during the time I was trying
to be a Christian. Some of the young
people secretly loved it, the older
Xtions said it was the devil. I don't
know if I saw it or not, just songs
from it.

The Vatican railed against
JCS for almost 30 years.
They claimed "the musical demeaned
and trivialised Jesus". They
relented in 1999 (as they do
in their wishy washy ways)
saying "the musical as an
appropriate spectacle for pilgrims."

Not quite as big a turnaround as
it was to stop burning women at
the stake, but with a god who
has no idea what he's doing because
he doesn't exist, any change for the
less repressive is welcome.

Brandon Victor was excellent as Judas. Despite the name, Judas is basically the lead actor in the play. He brought a ferocity to the singing to balance out John Legend's and Sarah's angelic voices.
