'Cheddar Man', Britain's oldest nearly complete skeleton at 10,000 years old, is revealed for the first time and with unprecedented accuracy by UCL and Natural History Museum researchers. Cheddar Man was unearthed in 1903 at Cheddar Gorge, Somerset.

It is generally believed that mankind's natural pigmentation was dark, and "white skin" was an trait chosen by natural selection in northern Europe. The reduced Vitamin D in areas of the world with low sunlight favored white skin. In Siberia, which has much less sunlight, humans remained dark skinned because of their diet.

This reconstruction tends to move the transition to much more recent times than what is normally assumed.

"The weaker the ultraviolet light, the fairer the skin. Jablonski went on to show that people living above 50 degrees latitude have the highest risk of vitamin D deficiency. "This was one of the last barriers in the history of human settlement," Jablonski says. "Only after humans learned fishing, and therefore had access to food rich in vitamin D, could they settle these regions." Dark-skinned people who move to cloudy climes can develop conditions such as rickets from vitamin D deficiencies. Skin color, they say, is largely a matter of vitamins."

While Jablonski's theories of white skin developing as a way to combat Vitamin D deficiency are generally accepted, a timeline is much more difficult to establish.

If you think about it, 10K years ago the world population is estimated to be about 5 million. So there were probably only a few hundred thousand in Britain. Cheddar Man was discovered over a century ago, and no more intact skeletons have been discovered since. So it is difficult to determine if white skin became predominant 50K years ago or 5K years ago.

If you think about it, 10K years ago the world population is estimated to be about 5 million. So there were probably only a few hundred thousand in Britain. Scientists were able to sequence the DNA from the remains of a guy who lived in Spain 7000 years ago. They found that he had blue eyes but dark hair and skin suggesting that white skin in Europe evolved within the last 7k years.

I don't know what will make a racist angry.
IThe estimate world population was roughly 5 million 10,000 years ago and between 400 and 500 million in the later Middle Ages (between 1000AD and 1500AD)
We know that there was the underpinnings of racial ideas in the Middle Ages although the more formal theories were not developed until the 1700s.

Racists may get angry at anything, not just the timeline. Many racists think that different races had different ancestry (often citing the sons of Noah).

Which is incredibly stupid and ignorant. aside from the basic fallacies in the racist argument (such as it is), H. Sapien originated in Africa, meaning all our ancestors were black or dark-skinned at some point.

I wonder if the Cheddar Man feat can be repeated with existing neanderthal remains. H. neanderthalensis is found far and wide in Europe, and I suspect they had dark skin, too. Seeing as how most people, if not all, have neanderthal genes, well, that also ought to make the Trumpians angry.

I meant that the idea that the transition from dark skin to white skin was less than 10,000 years ago instead of much earlier. The traditional date of Noah's flood was roughly 4400 years ago, and the idea that the races developed from the son's of Noah has been around since the middle ages.

The hardcore racists who believe that the different races had nothing in common don't care what scientists theorize about the timeline. They reject the common ancestry theory entirely.

Voltaire was a famous philosopher who claimed two different species:"The negro race is a species of men different from ours as the breed of spaniels is from that of greyhounds. The mucous membrane, or network, which nature has spread between the muscles and the skin, is white in us and black or copper-colored in them."


Georges Cuvier ( 23 August 1769 – 13 May 1832)) is the father of paleontology, and had a huge influence on science which Darwin built upon. Darwin's voyage of the Beagle began the last year of Cuvier's life. Cuvier had a unique way of allowing for Adam and Eve, yet designating different ancestry for the races. According to Wikipedia:

Cuvier believed there were three distinct races: the Caucasian ("white"), the Mongolian ("yellow") and the Ethiopian ("black"), Cuvier claimed Adam and Eve were Caucasian, forming the original race of mankind, while the other two races originated by survivors escaping in different directions after a major catastrophe hit the Earth 5,000 years ago, with those survivors then living in complete isolation from each other.

Cuvier insisted that the Caucasian skull was most beautiful. He divided humanity into three races: white, yellow and black. Each race received marks for the beauty or ugliness of their skull and quality of their civilizations. According to Cuvier the White race was at the top and the black race was at the bottom.[35]
Cuvier wrote regarding Caucasians:

"The white race, with oval face, straight hair and nose, to which the civilised people of Europe belong and which appear to us the most beautiful of all, is also superior to others by its genius, courage and activity."

Regarding those he termed "Ethiopian," Cuvier wrote:

"The Negro race... is marked by black complexion, crisped of woolly hair, compressed cranium and a flat nose, The projection of the lower parts of the face, and the thick lips, evidently approximate it to the monkey tribe: the hordes of which it consists have always remained in the most complete state of barbarism."
