A lot of people think that math was born out of "tax collecting" or the need to do construction of large buildings. In fact it was quite associated with spiritual beliefs even from it's earliest days. They even had errant dogma, something we never associate with mathematics. Greek mathematics stalled because of their refusal to accept irrational numbers. Their reasoning mirrored the later reluctance to accept that the Earth was not the center of the universe. It seemed to be based on pure dogma. Plato's Theaetetus dialog discusses the irrationality of the square root of 2 while at the same illustrating the Socratic method. |
