I didn't know you soared so high in math. We should come back to that sometime.

I do indeed love math, it became almost as expressive as learning ancient languages. Everything follows such strict rules but arrives at such beauty and the joy of discovery cannot be beat.

Math as a religion?

Makes as much sense as Pastafarianism.
Ignorance is bliss and knowledge is power. But having only some facts can get you into trouble!

I couldn't disagree more.

Too much of religion is based around the personality of the leaders combined with the blindness of their followers. Math deserves a better place in the world than that.

I will say that Math did become an almost mystical experience once we got rid of numbers in college during my higher level math classes.

A lot of people think that math was born out of "tax collecting" or the need to do construction of large buildings. In fact it was quite associated with spiritual beliefs even from it's earliest days.

They even had errant dogma, something we never associate with mathematics. Greek mathematics stalled because of their refusal to accept irrational numbers. Their reasoning mirrored the later reluctance to accept that the Earth was not the center of the universe. It seemed to be based on pure dogma.

Plato's Theaetetus dialog discusses the irrationality of the square root of 2 while at the same illustrating the Socratic method.

the worship of Prime Numbers seems to have a religious overtone, though when there was a thread about it at WoV I got some insight into that ... not to say I became a worshiper, but still

Math.... get over your divorce and move on with your life we are simply not interested in constantly trying to find your ex.

Math... why if someone excels at many diverse fields is he called a Polymath?

Math... Is an irrational number a linguistics problem or a math problem?
