I believe that "legal tender" is something that can be offered, and when it is accepted the debt is extinguished. The legal definition does not say it "has to be accepted".

Then the meaning revolves more around "when it is accepted the debt is extinguished". Thanks.

Bitcoins are now going for US$200. This story of a man who bought 5000 bitcoins in 2009 for $27 are now worth US$1 million. He cashed in 20% and bought an apartment in a nice spot in Oslo.

You can.

Nothing stops you creating your own virtual currency. It wouldn't validate to the bitcoin system though, so if you sold your virtual coin as a 'bitcoin' it would rapidly be apparent it wasn't a valid coin, and the transfer would be rejected by the buyer.

While peaking at $1242 on Mt Gox it seems they are down around $322.
