My $30 phone has an app, called simply the Google App. I can give it voice commands to look up something or to do a command like "set alarm". I have forgotten how to set the alarm on my phone as I always just use voice command "set alarm for 7AM". Similarly if I want to find out about President Trump's upcoming trip to Asia I just say "President Trump visiting Asia" and it pulls up an article from NY Times. A stand alone device that does the same thing is Google Home for $109 I was simply showing you Amazon's version of similar devices. |

So you google things with voice with the Amazon thingie? Why is it worth anything, you couldn't give one to me for free. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Nareed Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 346 Posts: 12545 | I suppose the idea is to have several connected devices, with the echo as a central command device. So you might tell it to stream Episode VII on the TV, for example. If it then finds the movie on your phone and set sit up to stream on your TV, that would be nice. It's not as easy as it sounds. It has to open Netflix, say, find the movie, locate the nearest TV with a Crhomecast or Fire Stick, change the source on the TV to the dongle, and then stream the movie. That might be worth having. I'm getting to loathe touch interfaces as I use them more. Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | Sonos has just released an Alexa speaker ($200 apiece). The $50 Alexa Dot is OK if you want it to talk back to you about the weather, but if you want to verbally give commands to play music you need a pair of $200 Sonos speakers. So the mini stereo systems of the 1980's that replaced the monsters of the 1960's and 1970's has now been reduced to two speakers. |

Ayecarumba Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 89 Posts: 1744 | My friend has his home wired with Alexa. It's pretty cool to use the voice command. However, I am not comfortable with an online microphone recording and analyzing every sound in my house. |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | https://www.wired.com/2017/02/murder-case-tests-alexas-devotion-privacy/ Arkansas police recently demanded that Amazon turn over information collected from a murder suspect's Echo. Amazon's attorneys contend that the First Amendment's free speech protection applies to information gathered and sent by the device; as a result, Amazon argues, the police should jump through several legal hoops before the company is required to release your data. |
