So did you expect the blame would be directed towards Putin?

I expected them to honor real Russian heroes that dealt with Chernobyl
Life is strange
The series show Russian heroes
yet
Russia and Putin wants to forget about Chernobyl and forget about those brave heroes
We honor Russian heroes, Russia does not
sad

We've been watching some video's about Deadwood. The profane language on the series in period authentic according to research. Milch is an incredibly intelligent writer/director. I think when profanity is edited out of dialogue it detracts from the intent when the films are made. Sure maybe bleep out a few f bombs, but in the 1870's mining camps and even sometimes today, profanity can be the most descriptive words available.

NSFW, obscene language. start at 2:30

They swore a lot, but it was words
like shit, damn, hell, and godamit.
Those words are so tame now,
Milch replaced them with modern
swear words.

Nobody would have said c**ksucker
or motherf**ker in 1877, there were
no such words yet. They might have
said cu*t, but even that's if'y. The
F word was used in England to
describe the sex act, but didn't
get here till around 1900, and
didn't take off till WWI. They
never would have said it in
1877 Deadwood.

Taking gods name in vain was very
big, even saying hell was pretty
racy. And you never swore in front
of women, ever. It was a good way
to get beaten half to death. And
women never swore in public, and
seldom in private.

It's pretty well documented from 1870's military reports that every word used in the series was in common use across the west and especially in mining camps. There weren't a lot of ladies in those places who would be offended.

It's not a big leap from cutting someone's scalp off with a knife, to saying the f word.

Jesse Sheidlower, the American editor of the Oxford English Dictionary and the scholar of cussing who wrote The F-Word, agrees with your analysis. He stated “the evidence that we have is that they were using more religious blasphemy than the sexual insults which are popular today.”

“Mother****er, as far as anyone knows, was not in use at the time,” he adds. “There are examples of ‘mother ****ing’ from court cases in Texas in the late 1880s.” (It was used as an insult.) However, “the word itself doesn’t show up until late nineteen-teens.”

I think we are talking about historical accuracy.

The writer should essentially be accurate. He is writing a piece of fiction and he wants to convey the proper mood to a present day audience. So he uses the language appropriate to his story that the people of today understand.

C**ksucker didn't show up till about
1900, and much much later in our
culture. The F word was not used
in the old west, like he says. Sexual
insults were beneath even foul
mouthed cowboys. They were more
into words that described excrement,
that insulted your family, and especially
blasphemy. Most people were god
fearing and religious, so god damning
someone was very rough language.

The F word especially, when it was
used mostly in England, was not
a verb/noun/adjective. They never
said F you. It was only used to describe
the sex act. something you did to
or with a woman. Milch tried to
make a case that some of these words
were used but was shot down by
scholars. I never even heard the
F word till the mid 60's, it just
wasn't around the Midwest where
I lived.

It was used several times in 1944 by Patton in his speech to the 3rd army.

"The bilious bastards who write that stuff for the Saturday Evening Post don't know any more about real battle than they do about f**ing."

" I don't give a f*** for a man who is not always on his toes."

"We're going to murder those lousy Hun c**ksuckers by the bushel-f***ing-basket."

In response to criticisms of his coarse language, Patton wrote to a family member, "When I want my men to remember something important, to really make it stick, I give it to them double dirty. It may not sound nice to a bunch of little old ladies, at an afternoon tea party, but it helps my soldiers to remember. You can't run an army without profanity, and it has to be eloquent profanity. An army without profanity couldn't fight its way out of a piss-soaked paper bag."

What did they leave out. I have
it on DVD.
They left out the scene where doc dances with Jewell when she gets her leg brace.

they all the back story of how she got
the brace from him.

Turned out I hadn't watched far enough, the dance scene wasn't cut. Good part with the doc .
