In 1984 Ronald Reagan won re-election with 58.8% of the popular vote and carrying 49 states.
Walter Mondale had 40.6% and won only his home state and D.C.
Republicans won 55 seats in the Senate.

In 1984 Republicans picked up a net of sixteen seats from the Democratic Party. The Democrats nonetheless retained a commanding majority in the House (256 seats) .

That election is more amazing when you consider he did better than FDR in WWII.

Once Democrat equaled "working class." GOP meant "well off suburban." We have seen a change. Starting in 1965 the Democrats shifted to supporting welfare programs and became a kind of collection of special interest groups. Slowly, working class whites drifted to the GOP, sensing Democrats were not caring about them anymore.

Meanwhile, well off folks sent their kids to colleges, where liberalism always reigned but got stronger and stronger. Many stayed Democrat.

Now it seems weird. Republicans have the "middle" of the USA geographically but also income level wise. Democrats have the coasts and top + low income.

In 1984 Ronald Reagan had a better percentage of popular vote than FDR for 3 out of 4 elections. Still LBJ won the largest percentage of popular vote in modern history.
