Just about every comedy sequel ever. Why is it so hard to make a good sequel to a comedy? “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

The first of roughly 4 dozen films based on Marvel comics, Howard the Duck, was over 30 years ago, and it lost a fortune. The second through fourth film : Blade, X-Men and Blade II were profitable. The fifth film: Spiderman made a fortune The sixth film: Daredevil was very disappointing. I think they spend a lot of money trying to get good writers and directors. Just because they rock between successes and failures, doesn't mean it is haphazard. Howard the Duck: August 1, 1986 Production Budget: $37 million Domestic: $16,295,774 + Foreign: $21,667,000 = Worldwide: $37,962,774 |

Did that movie about a steel mill welder wanting to be a dancer have good directors and good writers? It made zillions and started a fashion trend of girls wearing ragged sweatshirts. The studio sold half the profits for peanuts, perhaps they thought the writers and directors were no good. I'm amazed that anyone goes to these silly comic book movies much less that zillions of people do and are openly admitting it, much less admitting how much they paid for those tickets.I would have to be PAID to go to a movie about Batman or Spiderman or WonderWoman. |

A movie studio only collects half the boxoffice revenue from domestic market. The studio collects less than half from the foreign market, and it is very dependent on the country. So a movie that cost $37 million to produce, and takes in $37 million worldwide in box office revenue is not even close to breaking even. It is doubtful if that film could make up the difference in VHS sales. Accounting is relatively secret, and there are also expectations to meet "The Cable Guy" should have been considered a profitable movie, but it followed four hugely successful Jim Carrey movies in two years, and is widely considered the movie that almost sank his early career. It was widely known as the first time a movie actor was paid $20 million to make a single movie while he was paid $350K for Pet Detective. The Cable Guy: Release Date: June 14, 1996 Production Budget: $47 million Domestic: $60,240,295 + Foreign: $42,585,501 = Worldwide: $102,825,796 "The Cable Guy" had similar worldwide revenue as "Pet Detective" two years earlier,Jim Carrey's breakout film. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Release Date: February 4, 1994 Production Budget: $15 million Domestic: $72,217,396 + Foreign: $35,000,000 = Worldwide: $107,217,396 |

Dalex64 Member since: Mar 8, 2014 Threads: 3 Posts: 3687 | As an aside, when my VHS player died after more than 20 years, I went to the local re-use center and picked up another one for a few bucks. I still have some stuff exclusively on tape. It really is impressive how much better quality standard definition DVDs are vs the tapes.
