Verizon launches unlimited data plan for $180 for four devices

The new Verizon Unlimited plan costs $80 a month for a single line or $45 a month per line for a family of four. With that, customers receive unlimited voice, data and text messaging — although Verizon says that after any single line uses more than 22 GB of data in a month, mobile data speeds may be slowed down for the plan. To sign up and receive the advertised price, customers must enroll in autopay and paper-free billing. Verizon offers unlimited HD video streaming with its plan.

Sprint is now having to price their unlimited service radically lower to compete with Verizon.

Even though 22 GB is small compared to the typical 350 GB data caps for cable companies (many which have no data cap at all), the possibility of real competition for broadband with cable companies is becoming reality. With casting onto a bigger screen fairly everyday, the objection to watching TV on a tiny tablet or phone is diminishing.

Unlike Sprint and T-Mobile, Verizon said it would not downgrade the quality of streaming video for unlimited plan users.

Verizon also maintained somewhat higher prices than its smaller competitors. The new plan starts at $80 for one line and goes up to $180 for four lines.

AT&T offers an unlimited plan starting at $100 for the first line and only to customers who subscribe to its DirecTV satellite service.

T-Mobile's unlimited plan starts at $70 and goes up to $160 for four lines. Last month, T-Mobile stopped adding surcharges and taxes as additional fees, effectively cutting its unlimited price by another 10% or more.

Sprint's unlimited plan starts at $60 per line and goes up to $150 for four lines. The carrier started a limited promotion this week, offering 5 lines for only $90 per month for the first 12 months.
