Hard to believe that the Reverend Jim Ignatowski was in only a single episode in series #1 of Taxi. He starred in 15 of 24 episodes in season 2, then every episode for the final three seasons.

Still one of the greatest TV creations of all time. Can you name these 8 characters who were conceived of as minor or short term characters and grew to become dominant characters (thanks to Memorable Entertainment TV)?

Another one was Monroe from "Too Close For Comfort." Was supposed to be a one-shot thing. The actor never went much of anywhere after, got a center-square gig on a "Hollywood Squares" reboot but barely had enough money for gas to show up to work.

Klinger of MASH was another. Was to be 1-2 shots only, but it worked out.

Ordered as in reading a book:

1. The Fonz. Originally a minor character on Happy Days. At first he came off as more of a hood than the character developed to be.
2. Frasier Crane. Originally a minor character on Cheers.
3. The actor is Bob Denver. I knew he was on a show before Gilligan's Island, but I never watched it. Probably before my time.
4. Sofia from Golden Girls. As I recall, she wasn't seen much in the early episodes but moved in the house later on. Great character.
5. Barney Fife from the Andy Griffith Show. Never watched it much.
6. Urkel from Family Matters. I thought he was always a major character but I only saw maybe 10 episodes. I like him. Of course I always have a soft spot in my heart for nerds.
7. Elmo from Sesame Street. I thought she was born out of a controversy that not enough muppets were female.
8. JJ from Good Times. I have a picture with the actor Jimmy Walker. He was just one of the kids when the show started out but rose to being the star. That is probably why they killed off his father.

Okay, how did I do?

I knew them all, Wizard is correct.

The one he didn't know:

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Maynard G Krebbs.

He was a beatnick before he joined the Skipper's navy.

I don't know either black guy, or the
woman with the knife. I saw very
little TV in the 80's, and not a big
sitcom fan of that period. Or the
dancing Muppet.

She was a Jewish comedian who went into TV and film in her mid to late 50's. In this role she was playing the Sicilian mother of an actress who was a year older than her. The series was immensely popular when it aired from September 14, 1985 – May 9, 1992 and it spawned at least 3 spin offs.

The black guy with the glasses portrayed the part for 9 seasons from September 22, 1989 – July 17, 1998. His part was pure comic relief until he took over the series. The series did not have a single white actor that I can remember. Netflix has announced a reboot after 16 years.

The other black actor is a character from a sitcom that aired on CBS from February 8, 1974 to August 1, 1979. Pushing age 70 he is still a working comedian.
