And ofcouse, Big Rock Candy Mountain which is a homosexual oriented warning song relating to riding the rails. |

The railroads were still a big deal and there were lots of retired workers who were there in the RR heyday. Collecting RR lanterns is still popular, every line had their own lantern embossed with their RR logo. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Some of the older ones from obscure lines are worth thousands. For instance, there was a line 10 miles from me that ran for 20 miles between two towns, from 1880 to 1920. All evidence that it ever existed is long gone. A lantern from that RR was found 25 years ago and sold for $600. I'm sure it would be over $1000 today. If you see a long RR line that runs for hundreds of miles, it almost always started as many small separate lines. They were gradually bought up and combined. The lanterns from the orig lines are often worth a fortune. RR's were like today's dot com's, lots of start ups and lots of failures. Lots of venture capital lost. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

RR songs and barge canal songs have historic value also. After the Eire Canal opened linking Buffalo, NY to NYC, the price of shipping wheat from Chicago to NYCity fell to seven dollars from one hundred dollars formerly charged by the rail roads. Of course rail road bonds collapsed, nobody fore saw such a collapse in revenue. |

Flatt and Scruggs and this type of music was very popular in the early 60's, after the Beverly Hillbillies came on in 62. Hard to believe we were still a country that was into our 'country' roots. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
