Leaving out international and domestic immigration for how, roughly 1 in 3 counties have a negative natural increase.

July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015
2089 counties Births > Deaths (natural increase)
1022 counties Births < Deaths (natural decrease)
24 counties Births = Deaths (no natural change)

With immigration included 1601 counties got bigger, and 1541 didn't get bigger

Clark County, Nevada
26,841 births
15,447 deaths
11,394 births-deaths (natural increase)
+7,903 international immigration
+24,901 domestic immigration
+32,804 net immigration
+45,655 total population change = births-deaths + net immigration

Mine is down a touch. Fine by me, we are at a nice population right now, no need for more.

Northampton County, Pennsylvania
+2,857 births
-2,841 deaths
+16 natural increase

+740 international immigrants
-366 domestic immigrants
+374 net immigrants

374+16=390
641 Total population change (residual 251)
Total population change includes a residual. This residual represents the change in population that cannot be attributed to any specific demographic component.

It seems like people are leaving the county and international immigrants are coming in. Not really a good sign.

In half the counties in MI that's happening.
People are moving away in droves and are
being replaced by international migrants.
More than half of MI counties had a negative
population growth in the last 5 years.

Been the case for decades in the northeast. Since the 1970s for the most part. Once the sunbelt became the place to be people started leaving. It can be nice for those left behind as cost of living stays reasonable. In some places they are thinning down the housing stock and once cramped areas are now seeing houses get actual yards. OTOH, it cannot go on like that forever. I have seen so many towns that are just plain dead. No chance for young folks to make their way.

15 years ago, in the pre-fracking era, I remember hearing that some counties in North Dakota were getting so empty they were ready to abandon them and make huge buffalo and wildlife reserves. It may still happen in some areas as parts of the American Great Plains were really not made to be inhabited.

It's getting worse in the last year. About half the counties had a positive natural growth rate, but because of domestic migration only only a third of the counties had a positive growth rate. Foreign immigration only replaced 2 out of 3 domestic emigration.

Wayne county had almost 6K more births than deaths but far more than that moved away.

The eastern part of the state
is where it's the worst. I live
in W MI, sometimes called
the best kept secret in MI.

The weather here for 8
months of the year is very
nice. Rarely humid, lots of
hills and valleys and rolling
tree covered countryside.
We're very close to Lake MI
and some very attractive resort
towns. The eastern side of the
state is an eyesore, flat as a
pancake and stuffed with people
I mostly want nothing to do with.

Pennsylvania is completely divided. A total of 52 counties are under the Appalachian Regional Commission (although it is not central Appalachia).
Out of those 52 counties 9 have positive natural increase and only 8 have increase including migration.

Eastern Pennsylvania Poconos has long been a retreat for New Yorkers (similar to the Catskills in New York State), but the Western Pennsylvania is trying to develop upscale golf resorts that most people fly to. Nemocalin is the biggest.

The other 15 counties that are outside of Appalachia in SE of state are all growing (both natural and total immigration). These counties have half the pop of the state. The 15 counties are below.

Births-Deaths
16 Northampton County, Pennsylvania
93 Bucks County, Pennsylvania
99 Adams County, Pennsylvania
160 Lebanon County, Pennsylvania
321 Franklin County, Pennsylvania
460 Cumberland County, Pennsylvania
983 Lehigh County, Pennsylvania
1028 Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
1161 York County, Pennsylvania
1226 Berks County, Pennsylvania
1335 Delaware County, Pennsylvania
1353 Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
1626 Chester County, Pennsylvania
2431 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
7522 Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

The big demographic news in PA for the last decade is that Philadelphia is finally growing after 6 decades of declining population. Births outnumber deaths, and international immigrants are finally offsetting domestic emigration.

Outside of Detroit and Chicago, Philadelphia is one of the largest traditional black and white cities. So they are finally building up a Latino and Asian population.

PA has a lot of great county names. We're
stuck a ton of goofball Indian names, after
the tribes in the area. Not too tough to pick
them out. Shiawassee? Keweenaw? Menominee?
On and on..

Pennsylvania is only 9 counties out of 52 in Appalachia, and 15 out of 15 elsewhere.
Utah is very fertile.

Michigan to Virginia is break point where counties with natural increase outnumber counties with natural decrease.
