Well in the original story, Jesus is acting like a fairly lowly servant, so it is an act of humility. But one of his disciples is very uncomfortable and seems humiliated. He first says no twice, then tries to get him to extend it to his hands and head so it is more comfortable.

Because neither gods nor unicorns exist, why waste your time. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

petroglyph Member since: Aug 3, 2014 Threads: 25 Posts: 6227 | Thanks Paco. "According to traditional Navajo beliefs, birth, life and death are all part of an ongoing cycle. It is the natural course of things. Crying and outward demonstrations of grief are not usually seen when someone dies. This is not to be interpreted as a lack of caring; according to Navajo burial customs, the spirit's journey to the next world can be interrupted if too much emotion is shown. It is believed that the spirit can attach itself to a place, an object or a person if this important part of the process is interrupted." " Before burial, the body is thoroughly washed and dressed." http://dying.lovetoknow.com/Navajo_Burial_Customs The last official act of any government is to loot the treasury. GW |

The pope is liberal. He often invites leaders of other faiths to join him in speeches. I think our own FrG shares his liberal interpretation of Catholicism and I believe FrG has said things to the effect of all religions pointing towards the same god. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

How long are they going to keep up these pointless exercises in boastful humility? Consider the act itself. Back when people in the Mediterranean and Middle East region wore open sandals, washing one's feet was important. Among the dirt, sand and mud one walked through, there could be all sorts of fungi and parasites. In a time when people wear shoes and socks or stockings, and spent most of their lives walking on paved streets. what's the point? So the pope goes and makes a media event, literally, of performing an ancient and quite useless practice, to show how "humble" he is? Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? Not me. The practice goes back to Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. It may go further back than that, but Jesus made it a ceremonial thing in Christianity. I'd rather see members of different religions doing that instead of killing each other, as we just saw in Pakistan. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

Of course, it's staged humility. It's all for show. I guarantee the pope isn't washing feet every day in the Vatican. It's the same gesture as politicians kissing babies on the campaign trail. It's to make them look humble and loving, when they could be the most vicious person on earth. The Vatican is all about politics, never forget it. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

FrGamble Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 67 Posts: 7596 | As someone who does this same gesture every Holy Thursday I can tell you that it is not false humility. It is a symbolic show and reminder for everyone that I am here to serve. It is a powerful moment and much more humbling for the people who are having their feet washed. It is notoriously the hardest volunteers to find every year. It is amazing how often the people say the same thing St. Peter said to the Lord, "You should not wash my feet?" “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” ( |

I didn't say it was false. I said it's boastful. "Look how humble I am, washing the feet of these poor sods! LOOKITME!"
Oh, it should be quite embarrassing for your subjects. It must be like having their bottom wiped by someone else. And in plain view of an audience? Come on. Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

OF COURSE IT IS! That's why you do it! It solidifies in their minds just how powerful the priest is, that they're embarrassed to have their feet washed by him. I guarantee that if you washed my feet, I would be embarrassed for you, not humbled. It's a ritual, like having to salute a superior officer. Washing their feet puts them in their place, makes them feel small compared to you. Just where you want them, psychologically. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
