There is some serious talk of Britain leaving the EU.

The UK was part of the first expansion from 6 to 9 countries over 4 decades ago. UK, Ireland, and Denmark all joined in 1973. Ireland adopted the euro, Denmark pledged to keep it's currency within a very narrow band of exchange rates with the euro, and UK has famously refused to enter the first stages of adoption.

The value of the currency issued by the northern countries in europe is small compared to the Euros in circulation, but the GBP stands at roughly 10%.
1,041.00 € Euro zone
99.1 € billions British Pound
8.8 € billions Danish krone
8.8 € billions Swedish krona
5.72 € billions Norwegian kroner
0.32 € billions Icelandic króna

No talk of a "Pound and Crown" currency yet.

But unless a Lorry Driver is smuggling people or cigarettes, why would anyone use the Chunnel?

Farage couldn't even get elected. He's a clown.

Britain out of the EU? Might happen. Not sure how well it will work for them long term though.

Using nominal GDP, UK & Canada are larger than Japan. Using PPP GDP UK & Canada is slightly smaller.
But throw in Australia and the trio is certainly much larger GDP than Japan and almost the same population.

Queen Elizabeth II is monarch of the following nations

United Kingdom
Canada
Australia
New Zealand
Jamaica
Papua New Guinea
Bahamas
Barbados
Belize
Antigua and Barbuda
St. Lucia
Grenada
St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Vincent and the Grenadines
 Tuvalu

Britain is hoping to replace it's EU ties with stronger ties to the realms. Some Commonwealth nations want UK to change immigration rules that it has no control over as part of the EU.

A good trivia question is why does the state flag of Hawaii has the Union Jack on it. It is my understanding that the king of Hawaii just liked that the design of the Union Jack. There was no strong connection to the UK.

But there is a weak one. It was Captain Cook (from Britain) who was the first European to land on the islands. Kamehameha I united the islands in his 70's using the European technologies brought to him by his two trusted advisers, one American and one British. The Hawaiians did not have flags, so it was probably natural the the King would base his flag on the ones he saw.

Although the ancestors of the Hawaiians were great sailors who populated the islands from their homeland in Tahiti, at the time when Captain Cook landed, they seldom sailed in large numbers from island to island. Each island was by necessity it's own kingdom. Hawaii, Iceland and Antartica are really the only places that human beings did not inhabit in prehistory.

The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with Sumerian Cuneiform script. Obviously history did not begin at the same time around the world, so arguably Greenland was first settled around the beginning of recorded history. Hawaiians do have legends of Menehune, which some people believe were settlers that predated the Tahitians, but no physical evidence has ever been discovered.

In all seriousness, when Turkey, the eternal Poor Man of Europe, needed its currency propped up, that Grand Old Lady of
Threadneedle Street backed Turkey and made Soros rich, losing a third of its reserves doing so.

Now instead of Turkey its Greece that won't go on a really austere budget for the greater glory of foreigners, perhaps that Grand Old Dame learned something.
