NZ and Australian hostels often have endless racks of Chamber of Commerce type brochures on the area, anything needed for cameras, camcorders or phones, internet access and kiosks with ride share services to music festivals or the like... its not just for the poverty stricken students but for anyone who wants to travel on the cheap and visit water falls rather than night clubs.

The USA is the only civilized nation that is so hostile to travel on the cheap.

They are there just to remind you how poor you are.

California and some Western states tend to be more accomodating to all those "hippie school buses" and solar bedecked camper vans. California seems stuck in the sixties mode of food stamps, food coops, tie dyed cotton and hippie chicks who only shop at Natural Food stores. Even in California, the real animosity if often directed at parking the vehicle rather than those long haired occupants cavorting in the back.

Actually stewardesses are simply nautical maids who scrub toilets, make beds and serve dinner. Its a great lifestyle since some are on party boats and even those who are not spend their lives amid sun and sand eating lobster and drinking beer. Many spend their lives at famous resorts and meet up with friends in port who've been celebrating, youth, sand and sun for nigh on twenty years. Yes, its often rich men and young women.... what in life is not? Many of those girls don't want husbands or kids, just sunshine and beer.

Yachting couples often spend over a dozen years cruising then put the kids in high school and then get another boat after that.
Its freedom enjoyed by the brave at the expense of the chamber of commerce which puts up with low rent crew houses.

Perhaps it's the tenting and the sailing, but tiny rooms with little to no modern comforts are no deterrent whatsoever to me.

Face, staying overnight in a bear cave, sleeping with one eye opened. The price is right.

I've been in a few. Every one is wet and very cold. A $30 tube is cheaper than a tarp and a bag ;)
